Grounding Intention: New Moon in Capricorn

Happy New Moon in Capricorn!

Today at 5:16 AM ET we have the New Moon in Capricorn at 1°. Oooh, I love a New Moon at this degree! The 1st degree is the epitome of fresh new energy just like the New Moon so paired together, it’s like a clean slate. We get to create from the wisdom of the last year and the fire in our belly edging us to strive for something we haven’t yet experienced before. It’s a time of calculated risk-taking. Less talking, more doing. Capricorn is an initiatory sign and wants to focus on the long-term plans— think the Five Year Plan. What risks can you take that will positively change your trajectory? Small steps count, too.

Below, I’m sharing the energy of this New Moon as well as the Moon Journal Prompts to help you harness this powerful energy. New Moons are about new beginnings, gaining momentum, and new insights for the next two weeks.

When I was thinking about what to call this lunation, I thought of “grounding intention”. I like to look things up online to see how others interpret it to see how it all comes together. As I searched it in the web browser, I was surprised to be directed to “intentional grounding” a term used in football.

According to Wikipedia, intentional grounding is:

“In gridiron football, intentional grounding is a violation of the rules where ‘a passer...throws a forward pass without a realistic chance of completion.’ This typically happens when a quarterback about to be sacked passes the ball toward an area of the field with no eligible receiver.”

In order for the team to keep possession of the ball, it was best for the quarterback to throw the ball than to risk a turnover. Sometimes those throws may miraculously meet the hands of a teammate. With this image in mind, it’s sounding like a gem I picked up from Myleik Teele who I remember quoting the saying, “ reckless abandon”. In one of her older podcast episodes, Myleik sits down with the former editor-in-chief of KING Magazine, Datwon Thomas who wrote in one of the Editor’s Letter saying “you must pursue your dreams with reckless abandon”. This quote is best used when considering your dreams and your future— if you want something, you have to go after it sometimes it requires you to move in ways that others may look at you as ridiculous. There’s nothing honorable about staying where you are meant to expand beyond.

That’s where Jupiter comes in.

With this New Moon, the Sun and Moon aspect Jupiter to give us this huge optimistic energy that will help us hold fast to our dreams (think of Langston Hughes). We are in Winter now and it can be a challenging time for many. This is a breath of fresh air, a reprieve from the tense moments we have been experiencing and those to come. Also, we’ve got Mercury making a supportive aspect to Neptune which encourages creativity and allows us to tap into our imagination. Grab a pen and get those ideas down! You don’t have to do them all right now.

Mercury in Capricorn is currently in its pre-retrograde shadow period so you’ll have plenty of time to revisit these ideas come next month. Mercury will station retrograde on the 29th until Jan. 18th and will enter its post-retrograde shadow period until Feb. 7th.

Also, we have a harmonious aspect from Venus in Capricorn to Uranus in Taurus. This time last year, we experienced Venus in Capricorn in a retrograde cycle. We may be revisiting some of the ways our values have changed from last year and may have new opportunities to continue that shift in perspective. Allow yourself to be surprised and shocked in auspicious ways.

Last but not least, we have helpful and beneath-the-surface energy from Mars in Gemini sextile Chiron in Aries. Mars is currently in its retrograde cycle for another three weeks. Chiron is the “Wounded Healer” archetype. In the birth chart, it’s where we experience wounds we cannot heal for ourselves but are able to help others heal. With this aspect, we can take action in transforming your wounding into fuel to move forward. It doesn’t make it all go away, but it does help you see that those wounds do not control you and the trajectory of your life and aspirations.

Here are a few posts I came across that really embody the energy of this lunar phase:

  • Twitter post by @RayLoveJr_ quoting Zora Neale Hurston with a thought-provoking question to lead us in our reflections of the year.

  • IG post by @_marlonpeterson with Nikki Giovanni talking about embracing getting older & the importance of loving one’s Self

  • IG post by @asiasuler about the meaning behind the word, “solstice

  • IG posts by @symithelight (the 3rd & last one)

  • Twitter post by @whitneycnixon talking about the necessity of mentors on our journeys but remembering that we are fully equipped.

Checking In With The Collective Energy

When I come up with the questions for the Moon Journal Prompts, I take into account the energy of the planets as well as the Collective energy via Oracle cards or Tarot cards.

For this lunation, I decided to use the Wild Unknown Archetypes Deck

Three cards from the “Wild unknown archetype” deck by Kim Krans

The Medallion: The Tools

When Light: upholding tradition, protecting, honoring

When Dark: burdensome inheritance, habituation

“ The passing on of sacred objects is an ancient ritual within families, between lovers, and in tribes across the globe. We gift jewels, treasures, keepsakes, and mementos of all kinds…some of great material value, others that hold emotional resonance, and still others with both… When The Medallion card appears, be aware of how the objects you hold dear may be embedded with unconscious energy or expectations… Perhaps it is time to reach for the Medallion that aligns with your deepest values.”

Oh, this card is sooo good for this energy! The sign of Capricorn is all about legacy and traditions. With Venus in Capricorn back in the same spot as last year meeting up with Uranus in Taurus again in forward motion, we’re able to shake things up again with the new clarity we gained from this year. Uranus is still retrograde, but it’s a slow, generational planet while Venus moves more quickly and is considered a “personal” planet that affects us more directly. Take stock of the things you’ve been holding on to out of fear, guilt, or obligation. This goes for people, places, things, and titles.

The Starborn: The Selves

When Light: alight, trusting, vibrant, aimed

When Dark: the feeling of misalignment, loss of longing

“The idea of destiny is controversial, yet The Starborn naturally feels a sense of destination and purpose, aiming itself toward a future that is beyond the mundane. When this card appears, travel back to your birth story for clues and insight. What did you desire when you were young? Practice seeing your life from a mythic point of view rather than a series of logistics.”

This card reminds me of the inner child within us, the many layers living within our cells and within our subconscious. Winter time is hard for many to stay optimistic, especially with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder/Depression) and the limited time outdoors topped with limited exposure to the Sun, our happy vitamin. It’s vital— literally, that we bottle up the feelings of joy and pleasure however we can and savor it. Steal any and every opportunity to choose your joy. Of course, there are things we have to do as a responsibility, but make life fun, add some play to your day. This reminds me of the effects of Jupiter and the Sun & Moon moving away from each other and the optimism may die down. The realities of our world may be grim at times, but we have to choose happiness and wellness. We have to carve it out in our days to restore our faith when we’re tested. I truly believe in Starseeds— most of them came when Pluto entered Scorpio in the 80’s into the 90’s. We came here with a powerful message and gifts to help us reshape humanity by exposing the harmful ways of living and treatment. A lot of us are finally awake to what we are here to do and how we are meant to do it or at least we’ve reached clarity on which way to go from here. It’s no easy feat to do this work. We deserve to enjoy downtime to rest and recreation just like the Winter months call for. We’re being called to listen and heed the natural rhythms.

The Nectar: The Tools

When Light: glowing, relaxed, subtle illumination

When Dark: fixation on fixing, aggressive approach to healing

“In Hindu mythology, there is a miraculous substance known as ‘amrit’, or nectar, that contains infinite healing power. This golden nectar or sacred elixir is the drink of immortality and, like its sister substance, ‘soma’ is known to activate subtle intelligent forces that ease the mind body and spirit… The Nectar card calls us to identify and relish in places, practices, people, and activities that regenerate and heal. Medicine is needed, and it comes in a subtle form that you may be overlooking.”

This is actually my word of the year for 2022 and has carried me through the year! Nectar has been such an interesting word to keep in mind when I had challenging times and while I had to remind myself of my purpose and intention. I had to remind myself as I acted as a calm space amidst my kids’ inner storms aka the “emotional wave”. The Nectar is a healing balm for the Soul. Imagine this luscious and rejuvenating liquid pouring onto your Crown, onto your scalp, down the nap of your neck, dripping along your spine, and bringing restorative energy to your aching body and heart.

Moon journal prompts

Use these prompts to journal with or meditate on. If you’re like me, retreating to a quiet space in your home, putting on some background music like solfeggio frequencies or my new favorite, “Faith’s Hymn” by Beautiful Chorus, and lighting a candle or incense helps calm the mind and allows you to tune in to what’s trying to get your attention. (I link my favorite playlists from Apple Music so you can tune in).

  • Are you able to visualize yourself accomplishing your goals?

  • What does it feel like in your body to imagine that? Where in your body is the feeling forming?

  • What does “reckless abandon” mean to you?

  • How does your Highest Self dress, speak, and show up? How can you embody that energy?

  • Write a letter to your future self about who you are now and who you dream of becoming. You can date it for 3+ years from now (i.e. December 23, 2026). Seal it and keep it in a safe place.

Wishing you a very happy & safe holiday!

Take care,
